The 36 Channels in Human Design

When you look at your Human Design Chart, you see lines connecting the nine centers. These lines are the Channels—and they're the key to how your energy actually flows.

A channel is created when two opposing gates are both activated. This connection creates a consistent energy flow between two centers. You always have this energy—it's a fixed part of who you are.

What Is a Channel?

A channel consists of two gates that face each other and together form a bridge between two centers. When both gates are activated in your chart, the channel is defined—meaning:

  • The energy flows reliably and consistently
  • Both connected centers become defined (colored)
  • You radiate this energy without having to do anything
  • Other people can feel this energy in your presence

There are 36 channels in total in Human Design, and each one has a unique theme—a specific way energy expresses itself in your life.

How Channels Shape Your Chart

Channels are the main reason why centers in your chart are colored (defined) or white (open). A single channel can define two centers simultaneously.

Your defined channels determine:

  • Your Type – The configuration of your channels decides whether you're a Manifestor, Generator, Projector, or Reflector
  • Your aura – What you constantly broadcast to the world
  • Your strengths – Where your reliable energy lies
  • Your life themes – What themes accompany you throughout life

The Three Types of Channels

Defined Channels

Both gates are activated. Energy flows consistently. This is your fixed equipment—it belongs to you no matter what.

Half-Defined Channels (Hanging Gates)

Only one gate is activated, the other is missing. These hanging gates create magnetic attraction: you draw in people who have the missing counterpart. In their presence, you feel the energy of the complete channel—but it doesn't belong to you alone.

Open Channels

Neither gate is activated. These channels are completely open to others' energy. You only experience their themes in the presence of other people.

The Channel Groups

The 36 channels can be divided into different groups:

How Channels Work in Relationships

Channels play a central role in relationships:

YouThe other person

Electromagnetic Connection

When you have one gate and your partner has the opposing one, an electromagnetic channel is created. This connection is intense and attractive—it feels like something new is being born.

Dominance Connection

When both partners have the same channel defined, they understand each other intuitively on that level. There's less friction, but also less growth.

Compromise Connection

When one partner has the full channel and the other only has one gate, it can become challenging—one sets the energy, the other must adapt.

How to Work with Your Channels

  1. 01

    Identify your defined channels

Which connections in your chart are colored?

  2. 02

    Understand the themes

Each channel has a life theme. Do you recognize it in your daily life?

  3. 03

    Observe hanging gates

Which people do you attract? Which channels do they complete?

  4. 04

    Respect open channels

Here you absorb energy. Learn not to mistake it for your own.

"Your channels don't just show you who you are—they show you how your energy flows into the world."
